Daniel Pink When Summary

In the book “When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing” by Daniel Pink, there are many fascinating examples of how people have applied timing to their advantage. In the first 40 pages, Mr. Pink discussed how as a child growing up, his mother used to always tell him that he would work twice as hard for something if he knew people were going to be watching. This phenomenon is called “social reality,” and it applies to any human behavior that affects one’s reputation, reputation being huge in our society. Thus we do things when other people are doing them or might possibly be watching us because they influence decisions regarding prestige and status-quo congruency. Another example of social reality can be seen in studying after class hours versus studying during class. The more people who are studying during times of day when most others aren’t, the more attention they will get from professors and peers alike.

In this book, Pink also discusses how we can use our own internal body clocks to perfectly time certain tasks for optimum productivity and efficiency. Humans have “ultradian rhythms” just like any other biological organism does that correspond with processes such as waking up and going to sleep and also correlate to cognitive processing speed and memory recall. These ultradian rhythms follow a distinct pattern: 90 minutes on then a 20-minute off period where one experiences slow-wave activity (deep sleep) during the off periods, alternatively known as an ultradian rhythm cycle. Thus it is scientifically proven that negative stimuli and information we receive during these 20-minute off periods have a more difficult time being remembered and retained. Thus if we want to remember something, plan to study for it 90 minutes before you’ll experience the slow-wave activity period in your ultradian rhythm cycle.

A big emphasis of Pink’s book is on planning our activities based on when certain experiences will occur. He uses concert pianists as an example who always play their best concerts when they’re rested and energized – not under-rested and over-energized, just like any other profession or activity would determine optimum performance timing. If we crunch data of past concerts and performances by famous pianists, we can find out what days of the week were optimal for them to perform and also what time of day. If we apply this same sort of data to ourselves, we can know when are the best times to go grocery shopping or buy clothes or even have social interactions with friends and family.

A great conclusion that Pink comes up with within his book is how important it is for us to build periods of downtime into our lives because compelling activities can stretch on for hours at a time if you’re not careful.DanielPinkWhenSummaryConsidering the fact that humans are creatures who crave novelty, one can get sucked into long stretches of maintaining high-grade performance during all waking hours until they eventually crash from exhaustion. Thus having downtime gives us an opportunity for our brains to process all the new information we’ve received throughout the day while also giving ourselves plenty of time to rest and rejuvenate for the next day.

When you read this book, you’ll come away with various realizations about your own life. If you’re a student juggling multiple activities and responsibilities at once, you’ll learn that the most successful students schedule downtime into their daily routines rather than overextending themselves and then having to deal with all the negative consequences of tiredness and bad decision-making. This is not only beneficial for students but for any individual who wants to lead a balanced and fulfilling life.
